Sky and Sea
I asked, "When would you love me ?"
You said, "Love lasts for all of time."
I asked, "When would you see me ?"
You told me, "Love is blind."
Then I have just one more question.

When will you be mine ?
So open and unending,
without likeness, kind or peer.
So like the poet's riddles,
so cloudy, now so clear.
Thus I named you Sky,
and if it chanced,
that I had wings,
I know where I would fly.

I asked, "If you grow tired of me ?"
You said, "Love will always bind."
I asked, "Why do you hurt me ?"
You told me, "Love is kind."
Then I have just one more question.
When will you be mine ?

Inviting, yet forbidding,
bitter cool, now warm, now sweet.
So like the poet's riddles,
so shallow, now so deep.
Thus I named you Sea,
and if it chanced,
that I had fins,
I know where I'd swim free.

I asked, "What if I lose you ?"
You said, "Love is something that we find."
I asked, "Should someone steal you ?"
You told me, "Love's no crime."
Then I have just one more question.
When will you be mine ?
